Description

The breed originated in France, Often known as Cuckoo Marans because of their colour, birds of this breed are actually found in several varieties including Copper Black, Blue and White Splashed. Two of the most remarkable qualities of the Marans are the dark chocolate colour of their eggs and the fact that although they are a heavy breed, they lay extremely well. The Maran shows the tight ‘hard’ feathers that are commonly associated with game birds, along with a solid body, a strong-looking beak and a relatively short tail. The French strain has the feathered legs that are common with Asiatic breeds; the English strain has non-feathered legs, the comb is single and medium-sized. Marans are friendly towards people and also to members of their own species, so are suitable both as pets and for breeding purposes.
