The soft-feathered, heavy Wyandotte breed originated in the US in the 1870s and a very large family indeed with numerous colours now standardised and a readily available Bantam form. The Wyandotte is a very hardy, robust, no-nonsense sort of chicken. It is certainly one of the most popular breeds in the UK today, finding favour with show exhibitors and backyard poultry keepers alike. with its attractive markings, compact, neat head points and tidy body shape, it is often the breed that encourages the novice, into the world of fancy poultry. The shape of the comb in the Wyandotte is very important, with the leader (the back spike of the rose comb) following the line of the head, The legs should be clean, thick-fleshed and yellow, although some darker strains can show a preponderance of dark scales rather than yellow. Another of the Wyandotte’s great attractions is its rounded, fluffy-looking shape: it is often described as being ‘a bird of curves’. Wyandottes are also known as a superb dual-purpose bird that mature fairly quickly and have good egg production. The docile, hardy friendly and attractive Wyandotte cannot be recommended highly enough as being the ideal beginner’s breed.
