Description

Named form a village in France, the Faverolles was developed in the mid-nineteenth century as a good dual-purpose breed known for fine table quality and strong production of creamy to brown eggs in winter. The breed reached the UK in 1886. Despite their heavy appearance Faverolles are good layers. The breed has five toes like the Dorking (with which it was crossed to produce a larger bird), lightly feathered legs, a beard and side muffs. The original colour was known as salmon, and in some countries this is still the only colour permitted on the show bench. Faverolles are very gentle and make good backyard birds, particularly for people with kids; they become almost affectionate with their handlers. However, they tend to be more aggressive towards other breeds.
