The Muscovy is an old duck, it is descended from the wild Muscovy duck (cairina moschata). Although sometimes known as the Barbary duck, it was originally domesticated by the Native tribes in the rain forests of South America. The domestic Muscovy is a very large bird raised for meat, which is less greasy than meat of some breeds derived from the Mallard.
The bird is a voracious omnivore and excellent forager making it great for pest patrol. The Muscovy is a quiet and personable duck with big red caruncles on the face. The long very broad body is carried horizontally, It is broad but not very deep and there is no keel formation. It is a flier and often chooses to roost in trees, but usually sticks around home.
They will brood two to three times a year, the ducks brood and rear their young reliably and therefore they also make good foster mothers for ornamental ducklings.
